Q: i got 2 questions if im not an american citizen can i get a loan if im going to college there? i live in New Zealand so is it possible to get a student loan in New Zealand but still go to college in America? (i may go back to NZ after a year)
A: Well if you want to apply for a stafford loan (federal loan) it will depend on your visa status, if your visa is a F1, F2, J1, J2, G series you will not be able to fill out the fafsa application because you will be "Neither citizen or eligible Citizen." The fafsa application are funds from the federal government here in the US. The other alternative would be to apply for a private loan, but you would need an American co-signer for the loan, and even then some lenders can be very picky about that too. Perhaps you could take out a loan there in New Zealand and bring the funds here with you, but you would need to work out the payments there because you don't want to be in bad standing at home. You would have to talk to your lender and see if they would allow that.
