How Is It Possible For My Mother To Get Financial Aid But Not Me?

Q: We both go to a local community college and are dependent on my father. My efc was about 18,000. I was only eligible for loans, but mother got about $4,000 in grants. Is it possible, should I ask them why? Thanks you.

A: Yes, this is entirely possible. The reason why is because on the fafsa application your mother and father are supporting you (and you aren't supporting them) and so on the question where it asks, "How many will be in college" you can only answer 1... because you aren't supporting your mom to be in college. When your mom fills out the fafsa and it asks, "How many will be in college?" she can answer 2. because your mom is responsible for not only herself but you as well. :0) Makes a ton of sense doesn't it? Ah, well, its the government and remember there is no "cents" in financial aid. Good luck...
